Angelica root (Angelica archangelica L.) is a biennial plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. Although it is a wild plant, it rarely grows spontaneously. It is mainly found in temperate areas of Europe and North America.
The angelica root sold by Terza Luna is offered cut, making it suitable for the preparation of herbal infusions and decoctions, and is traditionally appreciated for its wide range of uses in herbal practice.
According to traditional herbal use and various bibliographic sources, angelica root is a plant to which several properties are attributed and which may support general well-being, particularly in relation to the digestive and respiratory systems.
Traditionally, angelica root has been used because it may help stimulate gastric secretions, potentially supporting digestion and contributing to the reduction of intestinal gas. For this reason, it is often consumed after heavy meals.
Based on traditional use, angelica root may be used in cases of:
slow digestion and digestive discomfort
loss of appetite
muscle tension and spasms
fatigue and general tiredness
It is also traditionally associated with possible antispasmodic properties, which is why it has been used to help relieve menstrual discomfort.
Regarding the respiratory system, angelica root has historically been used as a herbal preparation that may support the elimination of mucus, and it has traditionally been consumed in cases of cough and respiratory discomfort.
Finally, according to herbal tradition, angelica root may act as a tonic, potentially helping during periods of physical or mental fatigue.
Angelica root is mainly used in herbal preparations such as infusions and decoctions. Excessive consumption is not recommended. In case of doubt, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
To prepare an angelica root infusion, use:
1 level teaspoon of angelica root
1 cup of hot water
Pour the hot water over the root and let it steep for about 10 minutes. Strain before drinking. Traditionally, the infusion is taken after meals to support digestion. It can be combined with other plants such as gentian root or caraway.
For a decoction, use:
10 g of angelica root
500 ml of water
Add the root to cold water, bring to a boil and simmer for 10–15 minutes. Turn off the heat, cover and let steep for another 10 minutes, then strain.
Traditionally, the decoction is used externally for massages in cases of muscle tension, neuralgia and rheumatic discomfort.
The use of angelica root is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. High doses may cause side effects such as nausea or vomiting.
Angelica root contains photosensitising furanocoumarins; it is therefore advisable to avoid sun and UV exposure during use. Do not use in case of known hypersensitivity. Always consult a healthcare professional before use.
