  • History and Cultural Tradition:

Boldo is an endemic plant of central Chile, where it grows wild in the characteristic sclerophyllous forests of the region, together with other native species such as litre, quillay, and peumo. The name "boldo" derives from the Mapudungun language (language of the indigenous Mapuche people) from the word "foḻo".

The Mapuche people, "people of the land," have used boldo leaves for centuries in their traditional medicine, particularly for digestive disorders and rheumatism. Mapuche ethnobotanical knowledge was later adopted by Spanish colonizers and, in the 19th century, boldo reached Europe where it was recognized in Western phytotherapy.

In South America, especially in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil, boldo is traditionally used to prepare infusions, often mixed with yerba mate to moderate its intense flavor. It is so deeply rooted in Chilean culture that many families keep a boldo plant at home for daily use.

    Traditional Use:

According to South American and Mapuche herbal tradition, boldo leaves were used in infusion as a folk remedy to support digestive function and liver wellness. In traditional Mapuche medicine, boldo was considered one of the most powerful medicinal plants ("lawen"), used by traditional healers ("machi") for various preparations.

In Europe, after its introduction in the 19th century, boldo was included in several official pharmacopoeias, including the Brazilian one, as a plant for traditional use.

    Natural Constituents:

    Boldo leaves naturally contain:

  • Isoquinoline alkaloids (boldine, main alkaloid)
  • Essential oil (1,8-cineole, ascaridole, p-cymene, limonene)
  • Flavonoids (isorhamnetin)
  • Tannins
  • Boldoglucoside heterosid
  • The characteristic woody and aromatic aroma is imparted by the essential oil contained in the leaves.

    Infusion Preparation:

  • Dosage: 1-2 teaspoons (about 3-6g) of leaves per cup (250ml)
  • Water: 100°C (212°F)
  • Steeping time: 5-10 minutes
  • Consumption: 1-2 cups daily, away from meals
  • The infusion has a slightly bitter and aromatic flavor, with woody and resinous notes. Traditionally consumed alone or mixed with other herbs such as yerba mate to attenuate its intensity.

  • Decoction preparation according to Mapuche tradition
  • Component of herbal blends for digestive wellness
  • Limited culinary use (flavoring fish dishes in South America)
